Statement of Solidarity for APIDA Students - We Support Our APIDA Community
Our campus is heartbroken and outraged by all hateful acts against the Asian community across the nation, in our state, and experienced by members of our own community.
|
This past weekend, across numerous cities, there were protests against the rise of anti-Asian hate, violence, harassment, bias, and discrimination in the U.S. There is an urgent cry against attacks on Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) communities. From California to New York, unprecedented members of these communities have been brutally attacked, whether verbally or physically. We recognize that the recent escalation of violence has had an enormous impact on the UCSB APIDA community, by creating a climate of fear. We want you to know that the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion supports you. We stand against anti-Asian racism and xenophobia that have been fueled by political rhetoric.

Statement of solidarity for APIDA students:
The recent and ongoing anti-Asian hate crimes, and escalations in frequency and severity, leave us appalled, disheartened, and exhausted, especially as we endeavor to work and live through the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Asian communities have been impacted by the rise in anti-Asian rhetoric, violence, and the continued erasure of our pain. As many of us know too well, there's a long hxstory of xenophobia and anti-Asian racism that has existed in our country.
Anti-Asian hate is racism, and our larger society plays a fundamental role in minimizing and invisibilizing the struggles of our communities. Below are links to some actions our community can take if we’re feeling activated as well as seeking supportive spaces for processing and healing.

UCSB Grow Site
At UC Santa Barbara we value an inclusive and affirming environment for all students, staff, and faculty. Learning about other communities and identities and how to be a supportive advocate and ally is a lifelong project. Many of us receive little exposure to identities different from our own in our earlier lives, and thus universities can be the first time we encounter people different from ourselves.
